Build the first model of human physiology.
The Lumos residency is a paid, in-person summer working alongside our founders on the core of a continuous-time foundation model of the human body. Two tracks, one frontier, a small senior team.
01 — Mission
Lumos is building the first physiological foundation model.
It's a continuous-time, multimodal model of how the human body changes over time and responds to disease, drugs, and other interventions.
Nobody else is going after it directly, at least not that we've seen. As a resident, you'd work on the model's core components alongside the rest of the team.
Sepsis prediction hours before it presents.
Why this oncology patient responds and that one doesn't.
In-silico clinical trials across millions of synthetic humans.
02 — Tracks
Two methodologies. One frontier.
You'll pick one track when you apply, but both cohorts share a house, an office, and a weekly seminar — so you're in conversation with the other side all summer.
Encode the laws, learn the rest.
Alongside our Cofounder & CSO
Build ML systems that respect physical constraints. Use simulation and HPC as ground truth. Digital twins for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and drug response — alongside our CSO, an ACM Prize in Computing recipient.
Learn the structure from scale.
Alongside our Cofounder & CTO
Efficient and trustworthy ML, LLM agents, multimodal learning, sparsity. The methods that have defined the modern frontier.
03 — Structure
Three phases.
Trial Week
- Fly to Durham, live in the cohort house
- Work alongside the Lumos team and your cofounder
- Travel, housing, and meals covered
Full Residency
- Become a Lumos Health employee
- Housing in cohort Airbnb (covered)
- Office space, compute budget, cofounder mentorship
- One research project you own end-to-end
What's Next
- Strongest residents continue past the summer
- Fall extension, or
- Full-time offer at Lumos Health
Total package: roughly $11,500 / month with housing and food covered — plus on-demand access to our cluster to run experiments at full scale.
04 — Profile
Who we're looking for.
No prior physiological modeling experience required. No formal credential required. The work is the credential.
What we read
- Raw modeling chops. Papers, preprints, open source, projects, theses. We optimize for modeling ability, not domain knowledge.
- Engineering and research fluency. Run an experiment and ship the result.
- Track conviction. Tell us which cofounder and why.
- Self-direction. Small cohort. Senior team. Fast pace.
Who tends to fit
- PhD students between programs or considering industry
- Masters students with published work
- Undergrads with arXiv preprints or strong projects
- Postdocs in transition
- Researchers reskilling into AI from adjacent fields
